A cheap length of treated timber is no bargain if it twists after installation, is under-sized for the span, or has the wrong preservative treatment for the job. This treated carcassing timber buying guide is built for trades and capable DIY customers who need to order the right structural softwood first time – whether the work is a garden room frame, decking subframe, shed base, roof repair or external studwork.
Treated carcassing is one of the most useful lines on any job, but the label alone does not confirm grade, use class, finished size or suitability for ground contact. Check those details before loading up the van or booking delivery to site.
Start with the job, not the timber price
Carcassing timber is generally machine-graded softwood used where strength and repeatable sizing matter. It is supplied in standard sections for framing, joists, rafters, noggins, bearers and similar structural work. Pressure treatment adds protection against fungal decay and insect attack, making it a practical choice for many external and humid applications.
The treatment required depends on where the timber will sit once fitted. Timber used internally in a dry building is a different proposition from joists beneath decking, framing in an unheated outbuilding or posts set into the ground. Do not assume every green-treated length is suitable for every exposed job.
For above-ground external work, look for a treatment specification suitable for outdoor exposure. For anything in direct ground contact, such as fence posts, retaining edging or certain landscaping supports, use timber specifically rated for that purpose. Standard treated carcassing is commonly intended for above-ground use, so confirm the supplier’s specification rather than relying on colour alone.
Choose C16 or C24 for the load and span
The strength grade is one of the first decisions on a treated carcassing timber order. C16 and C24 are both structural grades, but they are not interchangeable where a design calls for a particular grade.
C16 is a sound, cost-effective choice for many general framing jobs where loading and spans are modest. It is commonly used for studwork, partitions, smaller roof work and general construction. C24 is higher strength and typically selected where longer spans, higher loads or tighter structural requirements apply. Floor joists, roof members and heavily loaded framing often need C24, subject to the engineer’s or building control specification.
The practical rule is simple: buy the grade shown on the drawings or structural schedule. If there is no schedule, do not select a smaller section or lower grade simply because it is cheaper per metre. The saving disappears quickly when a floor feels springy, a roof member needs replacing or an inspection flags the work.
For joists and rafters, grade is only part of the calculation. Span, centres, imposed load, dead load, bearing length and any point loads all affect the correct section. A 47 x 150 mm C24 joist may suit one floor layout and be wholly inadequate for another. When the job is structural and the specification is unclear, get the span checked before ordering.
Nominal size versus finished size
Carcassing timber is commonly sold by its nominal sawn section, such as 47 x 100 mm, 47 x 150 mm or 47 x 200 mm. Once regularised, the finished dimensions are smaller. A nominal 47 x 150 mm section is typically finished at around 45 x 145 mm, although exact dimensions should always be checked on the product listing or with the merchant.
This matters when joist hangers, restraint straps, insulation gaps, proprietary brackets and existing timbers are involved. Order based on the actual finished section where components must fit precisely. It also prevents the common site problem of discovering that a replacement joist does not line through with the original construction.
Buy lengths that reduce waste and joins
Length planning is where a better order can save time, cutting and disposal costs. Measure the clear run, then allow for bearings, trim cuts and sensible positioning of joints. Long structural members should be continuous wherever possible. If a joint is unavoidable, it needs to fall over suitable support and be detailed correctly, not simply land mid-span because two offcuts happened to meet.
Ordering one or two longer lengths can be more economical than creating several joints from short stock, particularly on roof and floor work. That said, access matters. A 6.0 m length may be efficient on paper but difficult to unload, carry through a terraced property or manoeuvre around a tight Hertfordshire site. Consider site access, safe handling and storage before choosing the longest available length.
For repeated work such as a deck frame, garden office studs or flat-roof firrings, produce a cutting list before purchase. Group components by section and length, then add a realistic allowance for defects, end trimming and accidental damage. This is more reliable than buying a loose bundle and hoping the yield works out.
Check treatment, moisture and timber condition
Pressure-treated timber often arrives with a higher moisture content than kiln-dried internal timber. It may feel damp or show surface checking as it dries. Small splits at the ends are common and do not automatically make a length unusable, especially where ends will be trimmed or supported. Excessive twist, severe bowing, deep shakes or major splits through a critical fixing zone are different matters.
Inspect timber as it is delivered or collected. Set aside obviously unsuitable lengths before cutting begins. On a framing job, use the straightest stock for plates, long studs, visible edges and members that need to line through. Slightly bowed pieces can often be pulled into position for noggins, blocking or short spans, provided they remain structurally sound.
The preservative protects the timber, but it does not remove the need for good detailing. Keep cut ends treated with an appropriate end-grain preservative where required by the treatment system. Avoid trapping water against timber, provide drainage beneath decking, and use spacers or a damp-proof separation where timber bears onto masonry or concrete. A treated joist held permanently wet will not perform as well as one that can dry between weather events.
Green treatment is not a grade
The familiar green tint can be useful as a quick visual indicator of treated softwood, but it is not proof of strength grade, treatment depth or intended use. Different producers use different preservative systems and colours can fade once exposed. Read the product information for the use class and treatment declaration, then retain that detail with the job records where appropriate.
If the timber is being painted or stained, allow it to dry to a suitable moisture content first and use a coating designed for treated exterior softwood. Applying a finish over wet timber can lead to poor adhesion and an uneven result.
Match the section to the fixing method
A well-specified carcassing order can still fail at the connection. External treated timber should be fixed with corrosion-resistant fixings suitable for the preservative treatment and exposure level. Galvanised structural fixings are common for many outdoor jobs, while stainless steel may be the better choice in severe exposure, coastal conditions or where staining must be avoided.
Use correctly sized joist hangers, bolts, screws and metalwork for the timber section. A hanger for a 45 mm finished joist is not necessarily suitable for a wider section, and forcing treated timber into undersized metalwork wastes time and damages the treatment surface. Pre-drill close to ends where necessary to reduce splitting, especially with larger screws or bolts.
For decking and external framing, build in movement and ventilation. Leave appropriate gaps between deck boards, support joists at the specified centres, and do not bury timber ends in soil or concrete unless the product is specifically intended for that exposure. These small decisions usually determine whether the structure stays sound for years or starts holding water after its first winter.
Order treated carcassing with the full specification
A clear order saves calls, substitutions and delays. Give the grade, nominal section, required finished size if relevant, length, quantity and intended use. For example: C24 treated regularised carcassing, 47 x 150 mm, 4.8 m lengths, for external deck joists. If treatment level is critical, state whether the timber is above ground or in ground contact.
For larger jobs, separate the order into lines for plates, studs, joists, noggins and blocking rather than ordering one general quantity. It makes checking on delivery quicker and gives the site team a cleaner cutting plan. It also has limits in fire performance, appearance and dimensional stability. If the project needs engineered timber, graded roof trusses, hardwood durability, fire-retardant treatment or a precise machined finish, specify that product rather than trying to make standard carcassing do a specialist job.
