A tiled roof only looks as straight as the setting-out beneath it. Roofing battens for tile roofs establish the gauge, carry the tile load and give every nail or clip a reliable fixing line. Get the battens wrong and even premium tiles can sit unevenly, creep out of line or leave the roof short on fixing performance.
For roofing contractors, builders and competent renovators, this is not a material to select by price per length alone. Batten dimensions, grade, preservative treatment, rafter spacing, tile weight, roof pitch and site exposure all affect the specification. The right stock on site before tiling starts also avoids the costly stop-start that comes from running short halfway up a roof.
Start with graded roofing battens
Roofing battens should be purpose-made and graded for the job, not taken from general carcassing or offcuts of treated timber. In the UK, battens used beneath tiles and slates are commonly specified to BS 5534. They should be machine graded and marked so the installer can identify the relevant standard, supplier and treatment information.
This matters because a batten has a particular job. It spans between rafters or counter-battens, supports a concentrated line of tile load and receives thousands of fixings across a roof. A piece of timber that looks sound at ground level may still have excessive knots, wane, splits or distortion for roof-batten use.
Do not assume that C16 or C24 carcassing is a substitute. Those grades relate to structural timber applications, while roofing battens have their own specification, permissible defects and marking requirements. Use timber sold and labelled as graded roofing batten where the roof design calls for it.
Choosing roofing battens for tile roofs
The familiar 25 x 38 mm batten is widely used on standard domestic tile work, but it is not an automatic answer for every roof. The required section depends primarily on the clear span between supports, the tile or slate loading, and the roof design. Heavier concrete tiles, wider rafter centres, high exposure locations and certain fixing arrangements may require a larger section such as 25 x 50 mm or a specification set by the tile manufacturer or designer.
Nominal sizes can be confusing. Always check the finished, dry dimensions stated on the product description rather than assuming every piece will measure the same as its trade name. A few millimetres matters when tiles are designed around a particular bearing width and nail penetration.
Before ordering, confirm the following against the roof drawings, tile manufacturer’s data and relevant fixing guidance:
- batten section and support spacing;
- tile gauge, headlap and minimum roof pitch;
- tile weight per square metre;
- wind zone, building height and exposure;
- whether clips, nails or screws are required in each roof zone; and
- the need for counter-battens, eaves support or additional timber at details.
That last point is often missed on refurbishment work. A straightforward pitched roof may need extra battens around valleys, rooflights, abutments, verges, ridges and solar installations. Allowing for these details at take-off stage is more accurate than ordering only the calculated horizontal run.
Batten gauge is set by the tile, not by habit
Batten gauge is the vertical distance between batten tops. It controls where every course of tiles sits, so it must be set from the actual tile being fitted. Each tile type has a minimum and maximum gauge, influenced by its headlap and the roof pitch.
Do not lift a gauge from a previous job just because the tile profile looks similar. Small differences in tile length, nib position and allowable headlap can create trouble at the ridge or eaves. Lay out a sample on the roof or on a measured setting-out area, establish the eaves course first and distribute the gauge so the top course works properly beneath the ridge detail.
A straight datum line and regular checks are worth the time. Any error in the first few courses becomes highly visible by the time the tiling reaches the ridge.
Treatment is protection, not permission to cut corners
External roofing battens need suitable preservative treatment for their intended service conditions. The timber may be exposed to moisture during construction and will remain in a ventilated but potentially damp roof environment for its working life. Treatment helps resist fungal decay and insect attack, but it does not make poor storage, poor ventilation or bad detailing acceptable.
Keep battens off the ground, supported evenly and covered from direct rain while allowing air to circulate. A tightly wrapped bundle left in standing water can distort or stain before installation. Sort the timber as it is unpacked, putting aside pieces with damage from handling or transport.
When battens are cross-cut, follow the treatment supplier’s guidance for exposed end grain. On roofs with repeated cuts around hips, valleys and openings, this is particularly relevant. Also avoid mixing different products without checking compatibility: membranes, tapes and treatments should not be compromised by unsuitable chemicals or fixings.
Fixing battens properly to the roof structure
Batten fixing is part of the roof system, not a quick nailing exercise. Battens should be fixed securely into rafters or through counter-battens into the supporting structure, using suitable corrosion-resistant nails or screws of the correct length and diameter. The fixing must achieve proper penetration while avoiding damage to the underlay and without splitting the batten.
Tile manufacturers and fixing specifications may require enhanced fixing patterns in perimeter areas. Eaves, verges, ridges and corners experience greater wind loads than the central roof area. This is why a roof that seems fine in calm weather can suffer tile loss first at its edges after a severe storm.
Set the first batten at the eaves carefully. Many tile systems require an eaves support tray, tilting fillet or a different build-up to maintain the correct angle of the first course. If the eaves course dips, every course above it inherits the problem.
Joints should be properly supported and staggered where the layout allows. Avoid unsupported butt joints in mid-span and do not force bowed battens straight with a single fixing. Replace badly distorted pieces rather than building a visible wave into the roof covering.
Counter-battens and ventilation
Counter-battens run vertically over rafters, usually above the roof underlay, with the horizontal tile battens fixed across them. They create a drainage and ventilation path beneath the tiles and can be essential where the roof build-up requires it.
The exact arrangement depends on the roof membrane, insulation position and ventilation design. On a warm roof, a cold roof or a reroof over an existing structure, the details are not interchangeable. Check that the chosen batten depth maintains the required cavity and that eaves and ridge ventilation paths remain open once the roof is complete.
A breathable membrane reduces the risk of trapped moisture, but it does not remove the need to follow the roof system design. Sagging underlay, blocked eaves ventilation or badly detailed laps can still introduce water or condensation issues behind otherwise correctly fixed tiles.
Estimating quantities without coming up short
A basic quantity starts with the roof slope length divided by the selected gauge, then multiplied by the roof width. Add the eaves, ridge, verge, valley, opening and waste allowance appropriate to the roof shape. Complex cut roofs need more contingency than a simple two-slope extension.
Order in practical lengths that suit the rafter layout and handling on site. Very short offcuts increase waste; excessively long lengths can be awkward to carry safely, particularly on scaffolding. Check available stock lengths before finalising the cut plan.
For a trade job, it pays to order the battens alongside membrane, fixings, eaves components and the selected tiles. A roof is held up by sequencing. Having tiles on site without the correct graded battens, or battens without the specified clips and nails, loses more time than any small saving made by buying materials separately.
Common mistakes that cost time on tiled roofs
The most expensive errors are usually ordinary ones: using ungraded timber, guessing the gauge, overlooking wind zones, installing wet or warped battens, and treating every roof edge like the centre of the slope. Another frequent issue is failing to inspect the existing rafters on a reroof. If the support lines are uneven, decayed or out of level, new battens alone will not create a true roof plane.
Take time to check the substrate before the first line is marked. Correcting a local high rafter, renewing a damaged section or packing out a minor variation is far easier before tiles and battens conceal the problem.
