A roof trimmer or floor run is not the place to save a few pounds on the wrong grade of carcassing. C24 structural timber is specified where greater strength, stiffness and a more consistent finish are needed, helping trades get floors, roofs, partitions and outdoor structures built to the required standard without overcomplicating the order.
For builders and carpenters, the key is not simply buying C24 because it is the higher grade. It is choosing the correct section size, treatment and length for the load, span and exposure conditions on the job. Get those right, and the timber arrives ready to cut, fix and keep the programme moving.
What Is C24 Structural Timber?
C24 is a strength class for softwood timber graded for structural use under the relevant European and British standards. The grade indicates that the timber has achieved set values for bending strength, stiffness and density. In practical terms, C24 is generally stronger and stiffer than C16, with fewer and smaller defects permitted in the finished piece.
Most C24 carcassing is kiln dried and regularised. Kiln drying reduces the moisture content before machining, while regularising gives more consistent finished dimensions and eased edges. That makes a noticeable difference when running joists in a floor, building straight studwork or setting out a roof where level and alignment matter.
The designation does not mean every length is identical, nor does it remove the need for proper structural design. Timber remains a natural material. Some movement, knots and colour variation are normal. The benefit of C24 is that the grading process limits characteristics that would reduce its structural performance below the stated class.
C24 versus C16
C16 remains a suitable and cost-effective choice for many routine applications, particularly where spans are short or a design specifically calls for it. C24 is commonly selected where the load is higher, the span is longer, deflection needs tighter control or a structural calculation requires the higher grade.
That difference can affect the section size needed. In some designs, C24 allows a smaller section or wider joist spacing than C16. In others, the required depth is driven mainly by deflection, not just strength, so upgrading grade alone will not solve the issue. Always work from the engineer’s details, building control requirements or the appropriate span tables rather than making assumptions from a previous job.
C24 also tends to offer a cleaner, more uniform appearance because of the tighter grading. That can be useful where carcassing will be visible, although it should still be treated as structural softwood rather than appearance-grade joinery timber.
Where C24 Timber Earns Its Place
C24 is widely used in domestic and light commercial construction. It is a practical choice for floor joists, ceiling joists, roof rafters, trimmers around stair openings, stud partitions, lintel assemblies and timber-frame elements where the design permits. It is also regularly used for sheds, workshops, garden rooms and deck frames, provided the timber treatment matches the intended environment.
For floors, stiffness is often as important as load capacity. A floor that technically carries the load but feels springy underfoot is not a good result for the customer. The right C24 section, installed at the correct centres with solid noggins and proper bearings, helps reduce bounce and keeps sheet flooring better supported.
In roof work, C24 is often chosen for rafters and structural members where snow loading, tile weight, insulation build-up and ceiling loads all need to be accounted for. A simple lean-to roof and a habitable loft conversion are very different jobs. The latter may need calculations, steel connections or engineered timber alongside standard carcassing.
Outside, use treated C24 where timber may be exposed to damp conditions. A deck frame, raised garden structure or external wall plate needs timber suitable for its use class, along with sensible detailing to shed water and keep end grain protected. Treatment is not a substitute for good drainage or clearance from the ground.
Selecting the Right C24 Section and Length
Order timber by its finished size, not the nominal size you may remember from older stock. Regularised carcassing is machined, so a piece sold as 47 x 150mm will have a smaller finished dimension than its sawn size. That matters when matching joist hangers, calculating floor depths or fitting insulation between members.
Common C24 sections include 47 x 100mm, 47 x 125mm, 47 x 150mm, 47 x 175mm, 47 x 200mm and deeper sizes for longer spans. The best choice depends on the structural design, centres, bearing length and service load. A shallow joist may suit a short ceiling run but be wholly unsuitable for a floor spanning across a room.
Where possible, choose lengths that reduce unnecessary joints and waste without creating awkward handling on site. Long lengths are efficient for continuous runs, but they need safe unloading, storage and enough labour to manoeuvre. For a busy refurbishment with restricted access, sensible length planning can save more time than the marginal saving on a longer piece.
When comparing prices, check the full specification: C24 grade, section, length, regularised finish and whether the timber is untreated or pressure treated. Similar-looking carcassing can be a different grade or treatment, and that difference matters once it is built in.
Spans, centres and bearing are connected
There is no single answer to the question, “How far can C24 span?” The answer depends on the member depth and width, loading, spacing between joists or rafters, support conditions and permissible deflection. A floor carrying bedrooms, bathrooms and heavy finishes will be assessed differently from a lightly loaded ceiling.
Bearings and connections matter too. Timber needs adequate support at each end, correctly sized joist hangers where used, and proper restraint to prevent twisting. Trimming an opening or supporting a concentrated load may require doubled members, bolts, hangers or steelwork. If the work is structural, follow the drawings and do not substitute sections without approval.
Treated or Untreated C24 Timber?
Untreated C24 timber is generally suited to dry internal construction where it will remain protected from weather and persistent moisture. It is commonly used for internal floors, roofs and partitions once the building is weather-tight.
Pressure-treated C24 is the better choice for external carcassing or locations where damp risk is higher. Treated timber is often identifiable by its green tint, though colour is not a reliable measure of treatment quality or suitability. Check the stated treatment and intended application, particularly where timber is close to the ground, used in a deck frame or built into an exposed garden structure.
Any cut ends, drilled holes and notches in treated timber should be protected with an appropriate end-grain preservative. This is especially worthwhile on deck joists, cut posts and members exposed to regular wetting. Keep timber separated from soil and standing water, and build in ventilation so moisture can escape.
Handling, Cutting and Storing on Site
Good timber can be compromised by poor storage before it is fixed. Stack C24 carcassing flat on bearers, keep it off the ground and cover the top while leaving the sides open to airflow. Wrapping it tightly in plastic can trap condensation and encourage mould or distortion.
Inspect lengths as they are unloaded. Set aside damaged pieces, avoid using badly twisted timber in critical runs and keep the straightest stock for visible or accuracy-sensitive work. Minor bow can often be pulled into line during fixing, but do not rely on fixings to correct a seriously distorted member.
Cut square, use sharp blades and avoid excessive notching or drilling. Holes and notches in joists must be located and sized within accepted limits because they reduce the effective section. Where services are extensive, plan the route before the floor goes down rather than cutting through structural members to make pipes fit.
Getting C24 Ready for the Job
For repeat trade work, buying the right specification first time is the quickest route to value. Confirm the grade, finished section, treatment, lengths and quantity against the drawings, then allow for trimmers, noggins, waste and any extra material needed for changes on site. If a structural detail is unclear, resolve it before the timber is cut.
