A length of regularised carcassing can look much the same whether it is stamped C16 or C24. The difference shows up when the timber is carrying a floor, roof or deck load across a span. Get the grade wrong and you may need deeper sections, closer centres or an expensive correction once work has started. In the C16 vs C24 timber decision, the right answer is not automatically C24. It is the grade, section size and treatment that match the structural job.
What C16 and C24 timber grades mean
C16 and C24 are strength classes for structural softwood, defined under EN 338. The number relates to the timber’s characteristic bending strength in N/mm². C24 has a higher strength value than C16, so it can generally carry greater loads or achieve longer spans when compared at the same size and support conditions.
This is not simply a quality label. Both grades are structural timber when correctly graded and marked, and both have their place on a working site. The grade is assigned after assessing factors such as knots, grain direction, splits, wane and density. Timber may be visually graded or machine graded, but it should carry a clear strength-grade stamp where it is being used structurally.
C24 is usually selected from a tighter specification, with fewer or smaller strength-reducing defects. That often gives it a cleaner appearance as well, but appearance should not be the reason for specifying it. The grade is about predictable structural performance.
C16 vs C24 timber for common site jobs
C16 is a sound, cost-effective choice for many standard domestic applications where spans and loads are modest. It is widely used for internal studwork, noggins, partitions, smaller roof framing and general carcassing. For a non-loadbearing partition, buying C24 simply because it is stronger is rarely the best use of the budget.
C24 comes into its own where the timber has more work to do. Floor joists, flat roofs, cut roofs, decking subframes, raised platforms and longer-run carcassing often benefit from the additional capacity. A higher grade can sometimes allow a shallower member or wider centres, although that must be verified against the relevant span tables or structural design rather than assumed on site.
For example, a garden deck frame may use C16 or C24 depending on its size, joist span, joist spacing, decking type and expected use. A small low-level deck with close supports may be perfectly suited to treated C16. A larger deck, a hot-tub area or a frame with fewer support points may call for treated C24, larger joists, or both.
The same applies to roofs. A short-span roof with conventional loading may work with C16 to the designed section. For longer rafters, heavier roof finishes, solar panels or concentrated loads, C24 can provide valuable extra capacity. It does not replace a calculation where one is required.
Choose by the whole specification, not grade alone
Grade is only one part of the timber specification. Before ordering, check the finished section size, length, centres, clear span, loading and service environment. A 47 x 195mm C16 joist is not automatically interchangeable with a 47 x 170mm C24 joist, even though the latter is a higher grade. Depth has a major effect on stiffness and deflection.
Deflection matters as much as ultimate strength in floors and decks. A timber member can be strong enough not to fail but still feel bouncy, cause plasterboard cracking or leave a deck surface with unwanted movement. This is why joist tables and engineer designs should be followed exactly, particularly on extensions, loft conversions and commercial work.
When C16 is the sensible choice
C16 often offers the best value where the design allows it. It is commonly available in regularised carcassing sizes and is practical for routine work that does not demand long spans or high loading. Typical uses include internal partitions, wall plates, noggins, trimmers designed within approved tables, small shed framing and general packers or bracing.
For trade customers buying volume for standard studwork, C16 can keep material costs under control without compromising the job. Use the specification, not habit, to decide. If the drawings call for C16, there is no benefit in paying more for C24 unless a change has been agreed.
Do not confuse a lower strength class with poor timber. Structural C16 that is properly graded, dry enough for its intended use and stored correctly is a reliable building material. Reject pieces with damage caused during handling or storage, but do not reject an entire grade because it has natural knots or colour variation.
When C24 is worth paying for
C24 costs more because the grading requirement is higher and the usable yield from the source timber is lower. The premium is often justified where it saves on section depth, support points or remedial work. It is particularly useful where structural timber needs to span further, take heavier load or perform with less movement.
Specify C24 when it is called for on drawings, calculations or span tables. It is also a practical choice for exposed framing where a better visual finish is useful, although it remains structural carcassing rather than furniture-grade joinery timber.
For jobs involving building control, keep the grade marks visible until inspection where possible. Cutting away every stamp before the work is checked can create unnecessary questions. Retain delivery paperwork and make sure the installed material matches the approved specification.
Treatment is separate from strength grade
A common mistake is to assume that treated timber is automatically C24, or that C24 is automatically suitable outdoors. Neither is true. Strength grade and preservative treatment are separate specifications.
For internal dry work, untreated C16 or C24 is normally appropriate when the design calls for it. For external above-ground framing, such as deck joists or fence rails, use timber treated for the exposure class required. Treated carcassing for exterior use is often identified by its green tint, but colour alone is not proof of its treatment level or end use.
Freshly cut ends, notches and drilled holes in treated structural timber need an appropriate cut-end preservative. Keep exterior timber clear of standing water, provide drainage and ventilation, and use suitable galvanised or stainless-steel fixings. The treatment protects the timber, but poor detailing can still shorten the life of the frame.
For timber in ground contact or situations with persistent wetting, standard above-ground treated carcassing may not be enough. Use the correct use-class material for the application rather than relying on a heavier coat of preservative after installation.
Check the stamp before it goes into the build
A structural timber stamp should identify key information, including the strength class, grading standard, producer or grader and CE or UKCA marking as applicable. It provides traceability and confirms that the timber has been graded for structural use. Do not substitute ungraded softwood, fencing timber or decorative planed timber for a specified structural member.
Check moisture condition too. Timber stored in wet conditions can shrink, twist or cup as it dries. This is especially noticeable in internal studwork and floor frames. Stack packs level, keep them off the ground, protect them from direct rain and allow timber to acclimatise sensibly before fixing where the programme permits.
Avoid over-notching and over-drilling joists. Even C24 loses capacity if holes and notches are put in the wrong place or exceed permitted dimensions. Follow the design guidance for services, and speak to the designer if larger ducting or pipe runs are needed.
A practical buying check for timber grades
Before placing an order, confirm whether the job is structural or non-structural, then work from the drawing, span table or engineer’s schedule. Order the specified grade in the required finished size and longest practical lengths to reduce joints and waste. For external work, add the correct preservative treatment to the specification rather than treating it as an optional extra.
If there is no drawing or calculation, do not guess on a loadbearing floor, roof or raised deck.
