A driveway that dips, paving that rocks underfoot, or a shed base that starts holding water usually has the same problem below the surface: the sub-base was too thin, poorly compacted or made from the wrong material. An MOT type 1 bulk bag is the standard starting point for building a firm, load-spreading foundation beneath hard landscaping and external construction.

For builders and landscapers, Type 1 is not a finishing aggregate. It is the compactable layer that gives the work above it a fighting chance. Order the right quantity, lay it in sensible depths and compact it properly, and it provides a stable platform for patios, paths, driveways, bases and more.

What is an MOT type 1 bulk bag?

MOT Type 1 is a graded crushed aggregate, generally supplied from 40mm down to fine particles. The mix of larger stone and fines is deliberate. When compacted, the smaller material fills the gaps around the larger pieces, creating a dense, interlocking sub-base.

The term is still widely used across the trade, although specifications may also refer to Type 1 granular sub-base. For work where a formal specification applies, check exactly what the engineer, local authority or project documents require. Do not assume that every crushed aggregate described as “Type 1” is identical in source material, grading or certification.

A bulk bag is the practical option for smaller and medium-sized jobs where loose loads would be excessive or difficult to store. Bag weights are approximate rather than exact because aggregate has natural variation and moisture content changes its weight. As a working guide, allow around 800kg to 900kg per bag unless the product details state otherwise.

Where Type 1 earns its place

Type 1 is specified where the ground needs strengthening before the visible surface goes down. It is suitable beneath block paving, concrete slabs, porcelain patios, tarmac, artificial grass installations, garden paths, shed bases and many domestic driveways.

For a patio, the Type 1 sits below the bedding layer. For block paving, it sits below the laying course and blocks. For a concrete base, it normally forms the prepared layer below the concrete, subject to the required construction detail. The material spreads point loads, reduces movement and helps create a level working surface.

It is also useful for levelling and improving firm ground before construction starts. That does not mean it will solve every poor-ground issue. Made-up ground, soft clay, saturated areas or a driveway carrying regular vans and lorries may need excavation, drainage measures, geotextile separation, a thicker sub-base or an engineered design.

Type 1 is not drainage stone

This distinction matters. Because Type 1 contains fines, it compacts tightly but does not offer the free-draining performance of clean, single-sized stone. If your priority is drainage around a soakaway, land drain or permeable paving build-up, use the aggregate specified for that purpose.

Likewise, do not use Type 1 as the final decorative layer. It is dusty, angular and intended to be covered. Gravel, slate, decorative stone or a finished paving surface belongs on top, depending on the job.

How much does one bulk bag cover?

Coverage depends on the compacted depth, the actual bag weight and how tightly the aggregate compacts. A useful site estimate is that one MOT type 1 bulk bag covers roughly 8 to 10 square metres at a compacted depth of 50mm. At 100mm compacted depth, expect nearer 4 to 5 square metres.

For a quick calculation, measure the area in metres and multiply length by width. Then multiply that figure by the required depth in metres. This gives the volume in cubic metres. Add an allowance for compaction, uneven formation and small losses before converting the volume to bags using the stated product weight and coverage guidance.

A 4m by 3m patio is 12 square metres. At 100mm compacted Type 1, that is 1.2 cubic metres of finished sub-base before allowing for compaction. One bag is unlikely to be enough, so ordering two bags is generally the more realistic starting point. Always check the specific product information rather than relying solely on a rule of thumb.

Depth should reflect the use above. A lightly used garden path on good ground may need less than a driveway. A domestic driveway commonly requires a deeper, well-compacted sub-base, particularly where the existing soil is weak. If there is any doubt, build to the paving manufacturer’s recommendations or the project specification.

Getting the sub-base right on site

The preparation underneath the aggregate is as important as the aggregate itself. Excavate to the required finished depth, allowing for the paving or concrete, bedding layer and compacted Type 1. Strip out topsoil and organic material. It will decompose and move, which is exactly what a hard surface must not do.

Shape the formation level and deal with obvious soft spots before placing the stone. On clay or mixed ground, a suitable geotextile membrane can help keep the sub-base separate from the soil below. This reduces contamination and can improve long-term performance, but it is not a substitute for dealing with seriously poor ground.

Lay Type 1 in layers, not in one deep heap. As a practical rule, place it in lifts of around 75mm to 100mm, then compact each lift with a suitable vibrating plate or roller. Trying to compact a thick layer in one pass can leave loose material below a firm-looking top crust.

Keep checking levels as you go. It is quicker to correct a low spot in the sub-base than to chase it through the laying course or finished paving. For patios and paths, form the required fall away from buildings so surface water has somewhere to go. A flat-looking finish is not the same as a level that drains correctly.

Bulk bag delivery: check access before you order

A bulk bag saves repeated trips and keeps the aggregate contained, but it still needs a safe, practical drop point. Delivery is normally made by lorry with offload equipment, so access, road width, parked cars, overhead obstructions and the ground condition all matter.

The driver cannot drag a bag across gravel, steps, soft grass or a steep drive. Plan for a firm, level area close to where the material will be used. If the bag needs moving further into the site, arrange suitable equipment or be prepared to barrow the aggregate in manageable loads.

Consider weather too. A bag left on a narrow pavement, exposed verge or shared access can become a problem quickly. Have the excavation complete, membrane ready and compaction equipment on site before delivery where possible. That keeps the job moving and avoids shifting the same stone twice.

Choosing Type 1 against other aggregates

For most standard sub-base work, crushed Type 1 is the dependable choice because it compacts into a dense layer. Ballast is different: it is usually a sand-and-gravel mix intended for making concrete. Sharp sand is used for bedding and screeding, not as the main structural sub-base. Building sand is softer and finer again, making it unsuitable beneath paving.

Recycled Type 1 can be a cost-effective option where permitted, particularly for general hardstanding and lower-risk groundwork. Primary limestone or granite Type 1 may be preferred where the specification, consistency or end use calls for it. The correct choice depends on the job, not just the lowest bag price.
