A 47 x 150 mm length may look like just another piece of carcassing in the rack, but choosing the wrong grade, treatment or section can hold up a roof, floor or studwork job fast. Knowing how to choose C24 timber means matching the timber to its structural duty, exposure and required span – not simply buying the biggest lengths available.

C24 is a popular choice for structural work because it offers a higher strength grade than C16. That does not mean it is automatically the right answer for every job. The correct section size, centres, support conditions and design loads still matter. For work that is structural, unusual, heavily loaded or outside standard domestic construction, follow the engineer’s specification or relevant span tables before placing an order.

What C24 timber grade actually tells you

C24 is a strength class for softwood structural timber. The number refers to its characteristic bending strength, with C24 graded to perform more consistently than C16. It is commonly specified for floor joists, roof members, stud walls, ceiling joists, trimmers and general carcassing where strength and stiffness are a priority.

The grade is not based on appearance alone. Structural timber is graded using permitted characteristics such as knots, grain direction and defects, often with machine grading supported by visual checks. A proper grade stamp should identify the strength class and other key information, such as the producer or grader and relevant conformity marking. Do not assume unmarked, rough-sawn timber is C24 because it looks clean or has fewer knots.

C24 normally has fewer and smaller strength-reducing defects than C16, which can make it useful where a designer needs a longer span or wants to reduce deflection. It can also be a sensible commercial choice when the cost difference is modest and keeping a standard structural grade in stock simplifies repeat orders.

How to choose C24 timber by the job

Start with the member’s role. A non-loadbearing partition and a floor joist may both use 47 mm timber, but they are doing entirely different jobs. The joist is carrying imposed load, floor build-up and often internal walls above. It needs a section selected for span, centres and loading, not a guess based on what was used on the last project.

Floor and ceiling joists

For joists, establish the clear span between supports, joist centres, floor use and any concentrated loads. Bathrooms, tiled floors, partitions running across joists and storage areas can all affect the specification. Deeper timber is generally stiffer, but increasing depth also affects service holes, floor levels and available headroom.

C24 may allow a suitable design with a smaller section or wider centres than C16 in some cases, but this is not guaranteed. Span tables are specific to loading and installation assumptions. Bearer positions, noggins, strutting and restraint all form part of the system.

Roof construction

Rafters, ceiling ties, purlins and trimmers should be selected from the roof design, taking account of pitch, covering weight, insulation build-up, snow and wind exposure. A lightweight felt roof and a slate roof place very different demands on the structure. For a cut roof, accurate lengths and straight stock help keep lines true, but grade and section remain the first considerations.

Studwork and partitions

C24 can be specified for loadbearing studs, high walls or areas needing better stiffness. For ordinary internal non-loadbearing partitions, C16 or standard CLS may be more cost-effective if it meets the requirement. Paying for C24 where it brings no structural benefit is not trade value.

Decking, sheds and external frames

If the timber is outside, strength grade is only one part of the choice. Select a treatment suitable for the exposure, keep timber clear of standing water and design in drainage and ventilation. For posts set in the ground, use material specifically suitable for ground contact rather than assuming all treated carcassing will last in that environment.

Choose the correct section and finished size

Always order by the actual stated dimensions and check whether the material is regularised. Regularised C24 carcassing is planed to a consistent finished size with eased edges. It is easier to set out, fix and sheet over than variable rough-sawn timber.

A nominal 47 x 100 mm section is commonly finished slightly smaller after machining, often around 45 x 95 mm. That difference matters when joist hangers, insulation, noggins and engineered details are specified around finished dimensions. Read the product description rather than relying on an old site habit or a hand-written materials list.

Length is equally important. Ordering the exact cut length can reduce offcuts, but allow for trimming ends square, damaged ends and site tolerances. Long lengths reduce joints, yet they need more care during unloading, storage and lifting. On a tight Hertfordshire or London site, practical handling can be as important as reducing waste.

Decide whether treated C24 is needed

For dry internal work, untreated C24 is often appropriate where the timber will remain protected within the building envelope. For external framing, roofs at risk of intermittent moisture, or areas where dampness is possible during construction, pressure-treated structural timber may be the better option.

Treatment does not make poor detailing acceptable. Timber built hard against masonry, buried in wet ground or sealed where water cannot escape is still at risk. Keep end grain protected where required, treat fresh cuts with a compatible end-grain preservative, and avoid trapping water at connections.

Also consider compatibility. Some treated timber and fixings need suitable corrosion-resistant screws, bolts, straps and joist hangers. For exposed decking frames and landscaping structures, galvanised or stainless steel fixings are often the sensible choice depending on the treatment, location and expected service life.

Check moisture, straightness and storage conditions

Most structural carcassing is supplied as dried structural timber, but it is still a natural material. Timber can move if it becomes wet on site and then dries unevenly. Slight bowing or twisting may be manageable for blocking and short lengths, while badly distorted pieces can waste time on a precise stud or roof line.

When receiving a delivery, check the grade, section, length, treatment and overall condition before the material is spread around site. Stack it level on bearers, keep it off the ground and cover the top while allowing air to circulate around the sides. Wrapping timber tightly in an impermeable sheet can trap condensation and create the problem you were trying to prevent.

For visible or accuracy-critical work, order enough allowance to select the straightest lengths for long runs, lintel trimmers and edge members. Use shorter pieces, where structurally permitted, for noggins, blocking and other secondary work.

Do not confuse C24 with a complete structural specification

C24 describes the timber strength class. It does not tell you the span, fixing pattern, fire performance, preservative use class, connection design or whether an individual member needs an engineer’s calculation. A 47 x 175 mm C24 joist may be suitable in one floor and inadequate in another with a longer span or heavier loading.

Before ordering, make sure the schedule states the grade, finished section, lengths, treatment requirement and quantity. Include any matching items such as joist hangers, restraint straps, bolts, timber connectors and structural screws. Getting the timber right but missing the specified metalwork is an avoidable delay.
